so I purchased a 1990 240 DL a few weeks ago, and found out shortly afterward that it had a bad head gasket. well, the engine won't crank now...it's stuck/seems like it's stuck. when I try to crank, it can't even get a full turn in. so I think the engine is toast.

what are my options for engine swaps as far as years go? I found an 84 240 on CL that has a slipping transmission, but the engine is good. would that engine swap into my car? I've also been looking online and found a few places that sell used engines w/1 year warranties for about $700 shipped to my door.

I just want to make sure I know what years will be a direct swap. I don't want to mess with upgrading or changing things. it's my DD and I need to get it back on the road as quick as possible.

The most direct swap will be something 89-93, as they are all the same LH 2.4 fuel system. The 84 block is generally the same, but will require a little more work to adapt to your fuel system.

Are you sure it's not a starter or flywheel related problem ?

It seems unlikely that the engine would freeze up suddenly during your short ownership; without some explanation or event.

Can you turn over the engine manually to feel for some kind of obstruction ?

well, we went back to it and it fired right up...strange. so we drove it to a shop and they're replacing the blown head gasket today and I should hear back on what's going on when they are done. they said that maybe there was so much coolant in the oil that the engine just seized a bit since it didn't have enough lubrication...it purred like a kitten the whole way to the shop...no knocks or anything.

so I guess we'll see what happens.

My dear sir, as I keep re-learning, always trust in the Swedish engineering. It usually seems catastrophic when it starts, but in the end it usually isn't as bad as you're afraid.

I just put a new Headgasket in mine, and am now working on a busted Valve spring ^^;.
