The new check strap works great-absolutely no problems whatsoever in a long long time!!!!! :57:

I had the creak and snap problem with the check strap, too. 1994 850.
I went to the dealer and they fixed it for $75 as I recall. Four months later it was cracking and creaking again. Wow, was it loud!

I used JWCook's fix

I used stainless hardware. 1/4 SAE x 20 hex head bolt, 1" long. It was pretty easy. And cheap! The door isn't that heavy.

I was able to get the nuts to thread onto the bolts by using the tape-round-the-finger trick. Duct tape of course.

I bent a tool to grab the nut on the backside, to tighten it down.

Very simple.

I had trouble getting it back on, needed a second pair of eyes and hands for that.

If you try this, you will need -

• duct tape
• 1/4 SAE x 20 bolts, 3/4" or 1" long, with nuts
• washers and lock washers
• drill & drill bits
• magnet to catch the metal shavings
• Torx driver - T40
• Torx Socket (the reverse of above, I forget the size)
• Torx driver T15 - for the set screw on the elec connector

It took less than an hour all told.

No, I don't have a link like that. I did not weld the hinge. It was the check strap. And I didn't weld it. I put in a couple bolts.

1998 S70 and the hinge has come off from the DOOR. Has anyone had experience fixing this? Body shop here has and wants to charge around $150.00. Should I have them reinforce the other side at the frame while they are at it?? thanks

My 1998 S70 seems to have the opposite problem than the one being discussed here. The problem on my car is that, after I park and the door is opened halfway (or even fully extended open), the driver's-side door won't stop/"rest" in the halfway opened position but, especially if parked on an incline, will return to the closed position.

This can get dicey if parked on a hill, as the driver actually has to either hold the door open with a hand or extend a leg (awkward at best) to prevent it from coming back at thembefore they're fully out of the car.

Anyone else experience this problem or have any suggestions as to how to fix it?
