Hi all,
I've a '90 740GL wagon with 242k. Great runner, nice ride but recently began having difficulties starting. 90% of the time it only starts after much cranking and pedal to the floor, then it runs fine but idles a little rough. Recently replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Today the fuel filter was replaced to no avail. The trusted mechanic told me to try disconnecting the air temp. sensor to see if it would still start/run. Well, it did start and it did run (however a bit rough) but when I reconnected the sensor the check engine light came on and has remained on.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!! Thanks....

The light came on from removing the plug with it running.

Have you cleaned the throttle body and idle motor?

Thanks for the reply. I cleaned the throttle body this week...but, get this---after reading the many posts on this site I happened upon a relay I wasn't aware of that's attached to the coolant resevoir. There are 2 relays there, 1 for fuel and the other for coolant fan. It was suggested to reverse them to find out if there's fault with that particular fuel relay and after doing this--the car started immediatelyand the check engine light went out!!! This forum is great, Volvogirl is on the go again!
