hi gang well the worst thing happen to me today,i was driving to work when a drunk driver ran a stop sign, and slamb in to the driner side fender.he hit me so hard that the car spun around,i was verry shaken in side the car but i was ok. got out of the car and could not belive what i saw,86 volvo 240 gl wagon side and front was all pushed to the right side.the hood looked like a roller coster.my baby was in verry good shape fpr her age she still had the origanell paint on her. i have take verry good care of her and she has taken verry good care of me too.the driver of the othe car was so drunk that he did not know that his motor was in his lap,he was driving a 98 ford escort.well when the police did there thing and ask if i need a tow truck i said i dont know i got in my car she started right up and i drove her home.now she sits in my back yard waiting for the inshurance people to do there thing.as i walk by my oll pall its so sad to see her this way as she protected me from danger and keep me safe all of the years.im shure going to miss her. time to look for another volvo.i love volvos :banana:

Thank god you were in the Volvo and not something else where you could have gotten hurt.

I had a similar experience many years ago.
It was a 240 wagon, mist have been a 81 or so, my brother was driving and in difficult circumstances (driving into bright Austarlian sunset, right on the road), he turned right, across oncoming traffic he didn't see. I can atest to the fact most people sped up to 80 kph through those lights; so I, as left front passenger was hit in the left front passenger door, at near 80 kph, by an old heavy Ford.

Nobody was injured, except for maybe my brothers ego. In the aftermath, I noticed the side impact protection of the Volvo; it didn't take too much to see.

The rather sturdy metal of teh door was wrapped clearly around the thick horizontal protection bar; that is internal to the door. The locks had held and the whole strngth of the structure had, in my humble opinion, possibly saved my life, and also saved me from any injury.

This is one reason I now own a Volvo again;.....I now have five kids about to start driving..... :thumbsup:

I had an experiencee that I should keep to myself but hey.
I left my 240 parked overnight in the drive (it has a slight grade), parking brake off (oops). During the night, somehow it rolled away and backed into the neighbours car, my rear bumper into their front wheel.. Moved the front of their Neon 3 feet sideways and did $1200.00 suspension damage. It broke my 240's tailight.
Nobody hurt, just my pride.

I tie the Volvo up at night now.

Just one more story: in july 1984 my wife, making her every-morning U-turn in front of our house (small village road in Landsmeer, where I lived at the time), was hit by a medium van, doing some 90 kms/hr (as the driver admitted), whereas 50 was permitted. Our 244 sedan, hit just behind the front door, spun around and was litterarily broken, both in the roof and in the base.
For some reason I forgot, I was staying home that day with our two boys (2 years and 1 year old): we were waving mom out from the bedroom window!
My wife was shocked, of course, but bodily harm was restricted to some bruises where the belts had secured her. Inspection of the back seat (where normally my two sons would have been) learned that the SIPS had done its work quite satisfactory. Some weeks later we knew that my wife was pregnant when all this happened. No harm was done (obviously) to my daughter (born 7-3-85),
Since that moment I swore (more convinced than ever) that I would never drive anything else than a Volvo.
Ironically the financial situation left me carless for a long time, and finally (after a divorce and breaking my vow by owning a Citroen Visa) I reentered the Volvo-community in 2001 by buying a 1994 940 Polar Estate. It gives me all the old 244 feelings (tight steering circle, measurements; it was like coming home!), and a lot of extras: the envied extra space, the insensitivity to sidewind and the remarkable resistance to rust.
After I have sorted out my problems with the car audio (see that forum), I will be going to pay some attention to the outside. I've found some relevant advice here already.
