I have 1990 240 with an automatic transmission and repaired the wire to the solenoid that had shorted out due to chafing. I’m not sure if the tran’s is shifting into overdrive and that I may have a bad relay or solenoid. Once I repaired the wire and engaged the O/D the O/D off panel light didn’t come on. What is good test to verify that the trans is shifting into overdrive? Also, at what speed does the tran’s shift into O/D?

Best test is drive it and watch your tach. If it drops down in RPMs at higher speeds then it is shifting.

I should have mentioned that I don't have a tach in this car.

Get cruising about 60 to 65 MPH and then hit the button and see what happens.If it is working when you hit the button then it will come out of OD and then the engine will rev higher.

I have an 1981 GL (Manual); electric O/D. Bought it for $600 on ebay.

The O/D was very 'spasmodic' (drops out), when I got it so I read this website;

Tried 1) renewed gearbox oil 2) cleaned contact to solenoid 3) kept using it even though it drove me nuts

After much persistance; now it is working like a dream; I can only guess there was some 'gunk' in the solenoid, that cleared with frequent usage.

Are Volvos the ONLY car that can improve themselves? :clap:
