Hey Everyone, well, I'm officially puzzled. My 850 wagon has been having problems for the last few months with the engine light and abs light. It's recently had quite a bit of engine work done including new plugs, wires, coils, battery, cables, MAF, O2 sensor and a few other things I can't remember. Anyway, it ran great for months, and then, I got a check engine light. No noticeable problems accompanied the light, so I took my time about having it checked. When I finally did bring it to my mechanic. It was giving a MAF sensor code. Since it had recently been replaced, he cleared the code and noticed that the terminal connection to the sensor had some build up on it and he cleaned it up and sent me on my way. Couple of weeks go by and the light went back on. Now it was starting to hesitate slightly at about 2-3000 rpms steady idle but no stalling. That was a week ago, now the car stalls at least once shortly after starting it up and or within 5 minutes of a cold start. Does it need ANOTHER MAF sensor??

Now for the ABS light.... code read a bad left rear wheel sensor and it was replaced.... guess what, light is back on now and code reads the same problem.

I've known my mechanic for a long time and I completely trust this guy, we are friends as well.... I seriously doubt he's pulling any tricks on me, much less twice in a row. Who do I believe?

First check really good for vaccum leaks.Have you cleaned the throttle body lately?

For the ABS issue you might have a bad ABS module.

I agree with the ABS diagnosis.

First clean the sensors,
If still error, replace,
If still error, then start looking at the ABS module.

Hey thanks for the advice, I read the codes and I get 213, 141, 142, 144 and 214.... I have ordered a code book so I guess I'm waiting for a while. The light hasn't come back on since I cleared it 3 days ago.

Which ports did you pull the codes from?

I pulled the codes for the ABS off the A3 socket. The Check Engine code was the typical 121 code for the MAF... I have a new MAF so I don't know what is going on here, found a vaccuum leak and fixed that. Now I wonder if the O2 sensor,(Which I thought was also replaced) or maybe a bad MAF connector. I tried the unplugging and plugging back in trick earlier suggested. Now I'm waiting for the engine light to come back on. It usually takes a few days. The engine stumbles a bit then the light comes on. Usually it's in the morning 5-10 minutes after a cold start. Sometimes it stalls as I stated above, but then it's usually good the rest of the day

OK then The ABS codes = as follows
141=faulty pedal sensor,short-circuit to ground or supply

142=faulty brake light switch,open-circuit or short-circuit

144=brake discs have been overheated

213=left rear wheel sensor,signal absent when moving off

214=right rear wheel sensor,signal abesnt when moving off

I hope this helps :thumbsup:

sheesh! is it possible to have anything else wrong with the brakes. I wonder why if these are all bad, why the light hasn't come back on so far. I had my wife go out and look to see if the brake lights were working and as far as she can see they are.

THanks for the codes!

The battery may have wacked out at one time and set all the codes.

If the faults were still there the ABS light will still be on.

See if they come back.

well, it's been several days now and as I suspected, the ABS light comes and goes as usual, haven't re-checked the codes but I assume they are all the same. What exactly is the overheated disk code for? Being in Los Angeles in stop and go traffic, I assume that every Volvo owner is having this light come on regularly!

And the update on the check engine light is good... it hasn't come on since I cleared the code... (watch, it will come on tomorrow morning!) :blush:

I wouldn't really worry about the overheating code.

You probably just have a bad ABS module.
