Could somebody put some light on a problem. I have a VOLVO 740 gl 1988. tHIS SAME PROBLEM KEEPS REAPPEARING. Two months ago I put a secondhand starter motor on my volvo, I have used my car tonight and when I started it I had fan like noise constantly running, when I neared my destination I lost all my lights. after I was about to stop the car at my destination the noise stopped and my lights returned. This has happened to me several times and each time I have had to replace the starter motor as it burns out in the end. Could anybody tell me why. I have replaced the starter motor four times in four years. Help!!!! Volvo rix |

I would suspect the electrical part of the ignition switch is sticking on.

I think what Tech is suggesting is that the contacts in the ignition switch (for the 'start' position) are staying closed (even when the key is turned from 'start' to 'run') and therefore the started motor stays engaged. This could be what the 'fan like' noise is, the starter gear being turned by the flywheel.
If that is indeed what Tech is saying, then you would need to replace the ignition switch. |

Yes that is what I am saying.
You can try to wiggle the key switch and see if it stops when it happens.If so replace the electrical part of the switch. |
