I have a 1994 960 2.9 sedan. When first starting to move, there is a thumping noise and you can feel it under the seat. It stops as soon as you get to 15-20 mph. Just had the carrier bering replaced(whole assembly) and it didn't cure the noise. Now the mechanic says that the drive shaft must be bent/out of balance. Before going to the expense of another drive shaft, any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

worn UV joints check each of them ,more so at the rear of the shaft,if you can get under the car , safely,get hold of the shaft try to move it at each of the joints,the bearings in each of the caps may have worn out.

Another thing that can cause this is a sagging rear suspension. Those expensive nivomat shocks prevent the rear from sagging. Drive shaft alignment to the differential is very important and any sagging of the springs will cause that rumble.

Also a worn tail shaft transmission mount can be the cause.

Can you tell if it's coming from the carrier bearing or from the front/rear wheels? Was it having the same noise before replacement? Can you actually take a look at what he did, and check drive shaft for bends, scratches, abuse?
