I've re-glued two so far and I get better each time. First rip the old cloth out, then take a shop vac or scraper and remove all the sponge stuff thats left behind. If you don't then it dosen't work too well. After that grab some new cloth from a sewing or craft store and some 3M Super 77 spray adhesive, spray the ceiling (don't spare the glue) and stick up your new cloth. It works well with two people but 1 can do it alone.

Most specialty fabric stores (stores that only do material etc. for sewing) will carry headliner material whether foam backed or vinyl. Enough material to do a car is approximately $20 and the adhesive spray is in the $10 - $15 price range. Follow the directions on the spray exactly for best results.
I have redone a mini-van before and it turned out well.

u have removed all of the foam etc... now i am faced with a hard board type material. i really dont want to destroy this ... i am 'dynamatting' the roof to stop vibration from my sound system ... i am not sure as to how to remove it, there is a few clips at the back, but i imagine i would have to take off all the trim around the edge of the roof inside ... is this true?

My '85 740 GLE has had headliner issues, but recently it was getting pretty bad in terms of how much it was sagging and being a pain for anyone who would sit in my back seats. So until I get 350 bucks to spend on that, I used map push pins to hold it up. Original cloth, looks kinda cool, and very cheap. Just a temporary solution but its worked well for me.

My headliner used to hang so low that I could not see out the rear window through my rearview mirror. A staple gun and small staples solve the problem quite nicely.

Unfortunately you cannot get the headliner reglued. The cloth is (was) attached to polyurethane foam that deteriorates and allows the fabric to sag. I cut my fabric and tried to use some spray adhesive, but that failed miserably. I forget what we paid, but it was fairly easy to have replaced by my local Volvo Mechanic. The liner sagged on our 1991 740 wagon about 5 or 6 years ago (around 10 yrs old at 135,000 miles+/-). Hope it helps.

Hey all,

Im a new Volvo guy!!!

I bought a 1988 Volvo 760 Turbo Sedan a few weeks ago as a cheap second car to use for a year while my wife is station here in San Diego going to(Navy) Corpsman school , then were off to who knows where and I would just sell the car when we leave next year. Theres one problem, I have really fallen in love with this Volvo. Although it's almost 20years old it only has 52,000 miles on it and is in pretty good condition. But it has some cosmetic issues one being the headliner drooping in the back seat area. I want to thank you all for your ideas and I will try some of them before going to the expense of replacement.

PS- I will not be selling the car....instead I will slowly restore it !!!!

There is a BIG difference in sound level. The 940 headliners can be used although some say it is not the same as on 740. After 1990 it was significantly improved. I think that the brown dust is everything but not healthy - so I advise complete removal if the fabric is pierced and dust starts to spread around.

Here are some photos on restoration (cleaning + epoxy glueing on certain parts) of one original hemel (headliner in Dutch) ('92 940 type) before reinstalling it into '87 740 Estate.

Headliners on cars with sunroofs are more difficult to restore, especially on cars with non-glass original sunroof.

Both my '89 and '90 have that problem. I tore out the '90 and wish I would not have, because of all of the yellow foam crap.
What worked well on my '89 was simply putting thumb tacks into the headliner, they hold quite well.

It's coming down in the rear of my 90 sedan. I tried gluing the edge of it tonight with 'Auto GOOP'. I'm not optimistic though, I suspect that deteriorating foam will defeat me in the end.

I'm thinking about fabricating some hoops of some kind to wedge in there and hold it up... something out of bamboo slats from a roller shade, perhaps, or something similar.

My '85 740 seemed to have dodged the sagging gene up until about a year ago, where the headlining on the sunroof complete fell right off in the wind.

It was so refreshing to be bathed while driving on the highway in the red dust we all love so much.

SO delicious! :blownose:
