When my headliner foam disintigrated and started to fall about 6 years ago, I bought decorative office tacks and stuck them thru the liner to the board in an X pattern, like nice upholstery. They've never fallen down through years of windows-open driving, and as the disintigration has spread, the pattern is easily extended. And I save money for replacement parts to keep my aging car moving.

I'll just bet that most who have sagging headliners have never cleaned out their sunroof drain lines that run from each corner of the sunroofs to the under side of the car. The two front pipes drain just behind the front wheels and the back ones just in front of the rear wheels. During a rain storm water collects in your sunroofs gutters and spills over into the sunroofs backing board, making it wet and eventually causing it to sag. Regards. Horse

mine fell down, then it got ripped around the sunroof. so i just tore the fabric out, leaving the foam. then i got a wire brush and scraped out all the foam. next i got some fabric, then some locktite spray adhesive ( aerosol can ) from work. total cost : ~$15 Can. then i just sprayed a good layer up, let it dry a bit, then sprayed as i went along, starting at the back and moving up to the front. if i had to do this again though, i would start at the front and move to the back, and start a new piece of fabric for the indented section for people's heads. because that is tricky. oh and i also took out all the handles and plastic moulding of course:P DO NOT try double sided carpet tape, it doesn't work at all.

so far my headliners stayed up pretty good, although i used thinner + stretchy material, so its not really that "cushy" or appealing. i will be re-doing it again myself next summer, with some nice furry cloth. and i will be looking into purchasing some form of foam, even if its a tad stiffer.

My 1990 sags now. It was replaced before I bought the car 4 years ago. But as soon as I moved to FL last year. Droop! And now I am back in CO, I plan on re-gluing it (if I can). I always wondered if it was because of the humid climate.

The roof lining in my '90 estate has a lot of tears in it but isnt sagging.

I dont know if its the British climate (cloudy and raining all year round) but the 'sag' problem isnt all that common in these Volvo`s cars over here.

Ironic how most SAAB vehicles made late 80`s - early 90`s have the same trouble with the head lining. Dodgy swedish super glue perhaps?

Because mine is ripped in quite a few places i thought of removing the complete head liningas a panel leaving the bare roof(easy to do in an estate with no sunroof ) then strip and replace the material with some creme or grey vinyl simular to what the 240 headlining has.

Im thinking it will look quite standard, be a lot more durable and with some half decent glue it will last a long time too. plus it should keep my Mum, a retired upolsterer occupied for 5 minuites.

You guys are lucky - I had an 82 760 in about 1991, and the headliner sagged - it used to flap around like no-ones business. Didnt even last 10 years...

The headliner in my 86 740 never came down. I bet that the humidity in your area and weather or not it has been garaged makes a difference.?
