I'm in the middle of changing the front wheel bearing on the 480.Its a solid disc
model. I have the stub axle carrier off and am trying to drive the hub flange out
of the bearing. I'm trying to do this without damaging the dust cover, but so
far I have not been able to budge it.
Any ideas?
Thanks Wolf

As I've had no replies I'm going to give you my own opinion.
This is a major job and if you are thinking of doing it yourself - do'nt.
Not unless you have got a fairly well equipped workshop.
I have now got the bearing out of the stub axle and seperated the hub flange
The Haynes Manual gives it three spanners. Unless all my bolts were
particularly tight, and the bearing was very stubborn, I'd give it at least 4 - 5.
Reassembly over the next couple of days as I'm waiting on a new solid disc
and new brake pads to put in while I'm at it. My disc was down to 10.3mm
which is the operating min.
The dust shield/guard has to go - cut it off straight away(I used a sharp
cold chisel)and give yourself better access and a better view.
New ones here from Volvo cost 43 Euro + 21% vat each.

Sorry to hear about your trials and tribulations.
I think you must have got a bugger to work on, i've changed both front bearings on my 93 440si (at different times) and though not easy I didn't have any major upsets and changed each of them in about 2 hours with just basic tools.
Saves lots of money too!!!

That's encourageing to hear. I'd readily do the job again now, mainly because I found the light engineering firm that does all the bearings for the local garages.
If you bring in the stub axle to them, they will seperate the flange, take out the old bearing, and press in the new bearing and flange for about 25 Euro. I'd actually beaten out the second old bearing when I remembered them. I had thought you had to buy the bearings there, but no, you can supply your own.
Both front wheels are finished with new discs and pads and we are back on the road again. (New pads on the rear as well)
