Hi All,
My 2001 1.9T (170k km) has developed 3 worrying issues when starting up cold. From my research, some folks say engine mounts, other CV joint.

Anyway, here are the symptoms:

When the car is left outside (below 0 Celsius / 32 Fahrenheit), these two things occur:
1. Excessive vibration and resonance heard and felt from within the car (in park). It almost sounds like a bad exhaust bracket from inside the car (rumbling) when in Park. This goes away in about 30seconds, but can still be felt when the engine is revved for a few minutes after startup.

2. For the first 3-4 minutes of driving/accelerating, an intermittent rubbing and almost knocking sound can be heard and felt from the front left end.

When the car starts up (even at warmer temperatures in my garage):
3. Vibrations shake the car when the steering wheel is turned about 75% of the way left and going forward (symptoms 1 and 2 are only there at colder start-ups). No noise when turning right or when in neutral/reverse.

All symptoms go away (or are very reduced) after about 5 minutes of driving.

Any ideas? My local garage hits at the engine mounts and even the resonator (the latter which I doubt because I don't hear anything from outside the car).

Thanks all!

I had the same symptoms a few years ago - worn engine mount. No problems since replacement.

Could also be droplinks rattling.. usually only notice it under thirty mph.. Your right though if the gaiters r worn behibnd the wheels then it can cause a knocking sound when turning, also its an mot failure
