I just had my solenoid changed and I changed the OD relay and my car still doesn't shift into 4th gear. Could the garage have put the solenoid on backwards? my switch on the shifter was replaced with a toggle switch from autozone. My volvo has 230K miles and it is a 1990. Any help??? Thanks

I brought my car back to the garage and told them the overdrive was still not working even with new relay and solenoid. They looked at it again and said the new solenoid they put on was faulty/leaking. They ordered a new one and will install tomorrow. The only thing that stinks is the old solenoid was put on again because the new one broke, works fine now. hmmm. I wish I knew about the Overdrive bypass kit before a purchased a new solenoid for $185.

I have the same problem on mines, its a 1991 740 non-turbo, 1st, 2nd, 3rd shift fine, but to get to 4th, I have to go over 60 miles in order for the transmission to shift to 4th.

check the linkage and kick down cable at the throttle ,the cable may be loose or tight.

When the overdrive functioned properly, how often did you unlock and off overdrive? If the answer is very rare, so just skip completely electric and do it yourself ... in a few hours, you'll never have to worry again.

I had the same issue a few years ago. If you don't care whether you have the overdrive option, the simplest solution is to buy a smal plate and cap it off the port where the solenoid normally goes. Your 4th gear will work but you don't have the option to switch it of. The plates are sold at IPDUSA.COM. About $20. I never had the problem after I did it.

Greetings , i had a persistent issue with my 740 GLE overdrive relay, the warning light would come on
erratically and i would not have a 4th gear; the mechanics fitted a second-hand one for $60, but the problem came back
a few weeks later. I removed the relay from behind the ashtray area and got my soldering Iron on to it, just re-soldered the points and have not had a problem since then about 12 months ago.

I had the same problem on my '90 740GL. I got the OD solenoid bypass plate from IPDUSA.com, and the car shifts fine now.

add 1 more to having success with Overdrive Relay replacement. $15 free shipping from ebay and now I have 4th gear!

It does seem I need to let off the gas for a sec every time I want the car to shift up, especially between 2nd and 3rd,is that normal for and 88 with 150,000?

Have someone check the "detent" cable- it may be out of adjustment. It is supposed to "catch" just before "wide open throttle". If it catches too early it can keep your car from upshifting as you've described.

Hello mates,

When you had this shifting problem from 3rd to 4th gear, did you have the overdrive arrow light on?
I have the same problem but the light isn't on, but it comes on when i press the button.
After reading your messages here i ordered that plate from IPD but now not sure if that is the problem I have...

any advice?

thanks..

I have the same issue as described by neworleand, but with a 93 940. My overdrive light functions properly when pushing the button on the shifter (the OD light turns on / off when pushing the button). I can hear the relay click behind the dash, but no 4th gear when the OD is not engaged (OD arrow light off).
Had the Volvo shop replace the solenoid, adjust kick-down cable, etc. - still no 4th gear. I too ordered a bypass kit from ipd this weekend - hoping that will work as I'm thinking it's an electrical problem between the relay and the solenoidn as I believe the solenoid needs to be charged to actuate 4th gear, and in the default state is uncharged?
Any advice?

What do you mean by the solenoid needs to be charged? On my car the overdrive does not work until about 10 or 15 minutes of the car running. until that 15 minutes passed the over drive relay does not click and the light does not come on.

I have changed out the relay with another used one and it had the same symptoms. Is the not working for 10 minutes a common problem with bad relays? I might have got another bad relay.

Anybody have any input on charging the solenoid?

check the wires on the solenoid ,for rust or dirt, and clean, try that first, you only need to twist it with the wires off ,note were the wires go ,it is about a 13mm spanner to remove it.
