Not sure I understand why this would be available on some models - taken from the Volvo USA site -

Volvo is pleased to announce the arrival of the Volvo iPod Adapter, the perfect way to connect an iPod to the audio system of your Volvo. Simply plug the iPod into a cable located in the armrest compartment. Then the car’s audio system controls take over.

Use the audio system to:

- Control volume

- Change to next or previous track

- Fast-forward through tracks

- Quickly change tracks

- Handle 9 different play lists

- Play songs randomly

- Play songs alphabetically

- Steering wheel controls can be used to change tracks and adjust volume

Fully Charged

No need to worry about running down your iPod’s battery - the Volvo iPod Adapter charges your iPod whenever it’s connected and the car is running.

Quick Installation in your Service Shop

The Volvo iPod Adapter comes complete with a wiring harness and cable, and can easily be installed by your service shop. Installation time is approximately one hour.

Easy to Use

The iPod Adapter plug mounts conveniently in the armrest compartment. Simply open the armrest lid to access the iPod connector, plug it in, turn it on, and close the armrest. Select the "10 CD Changer" mode, from the radio’s Source button, and you are ready to go.

Download information about the Volvo iPod Adapter (PDF file).

Volvo iPod Adapter is available for S60, V70, XC70, and S80 models 2001 and newer.

Note: iPod not included. Volvo iPod Adapter does not fit the iPod Shuffle.

I am not sure I understand your question...but if you are wondering why it says it is not available on all models, it is because the new S40 does not offer the option yet. The stereo is quite different from other Volvo models and there is no "hardwire" interface yet.

when you say IPod are you only talking Apple or using the generic term to cover all MP3 players?
