Hi, I am having a problem with my 93 850 Volvo with 128K miles. It will not start without jumping 12 volts to the starter solenoid. The arrow light is flashing and it is stuck in winter mode. I have tried shifting between P and L a number of times with no change. I believe that I need to change out the Transmission Position Indicating Switch ( PNP switch). Is this reasonable? I have a Haynes manual for this car but it doesnít contain a procedure for this work. Where can I find a procedure for this change out? Is a special tool needed for calibration? If I donít do the work can a non Volvo transmission mechanic be trusted to this work?

Many thanks for any advice.
Alden

SeaMike has been very helpful on this problem. He even sent me a used PNP switch. I finally was able install the new switch and it now drives in non winter mode and starts with the key. Many thanks Mike!!

Alden and SeaMike, I am also having a similar problem with my 1996 960. It started last year after leaving the car at the airport in sub zero temps for 2 weeks (Dec2010). Came back and the car wouldn't shift higher than 2nd gear. Parked it for awhile turned off and turned on, drove around the parking lot and everything worked fine-except it was still stuck in winter mode, which is what i needed at the time. All summer long I never had a problem and now after a couple frosty mornings the problem is acting up again. It goes into winter mode and the orange arrow flashes. I selected S-sport mode and it worked good for getting me to work that day. The next day my bro-in-law drove my car for about 3hours on the highway and then started hearing a loud "whinnding" noise (IMG:style_emoticons/default/haha.gif) ; so he stopped driving. Drove it again the next and was good except first thing in the morning the orange arrow was blinking again and he would hear a noise when the RMPs got high just before it shifted. -Obviously not good for him to be driving highway miles if the car is in winter mode.

Anyway trying to find the solution. Talked to a Volvo shop in Calgary. Told me its a classic PNP switch problem and would run me about $300 for the part and a total of $450 w/ labor. Is this something I can switch out myself? Does it need a special tool for calibration like Alden asked?

Another local shop said it could be my deferential fluid.? What would that have to do with my tranny modes going crazy?

Thanks for any help.
