I have a V50 made in 2007 and just been told that the issue with the air con is a failed air compressor and to replace it it will cost 800 (UK Sterling)...but there is a 70% chance that it's covered by warranty, but if it isn't and i tell them to stop work they want 250 for finding the problem.

could this be right or are they having me over?

The magnetic clutch lining of the a/c compressor seems to be a common weakness in the V50 & S40, wearing down to the point where it no longer engages after about 70 - 80,000 miles (depending on the use of the a/c) and generally requires the compressor to be replaced to fix the problem. This can be a rather expensive fix. There is a way of extending the life of the compressor by removing some shims as can be found in the following link.

Depending on interpretation you may be covered by warranty. If the compressor is interpreted as a component failing within the warranty you should be covered, but if the magnetic clutch lining is interpreted as normal wear and tear as with brake pads or the clutch disc you may have to foot the bill. Hopefully your dealer gives you the former interpretation.

Below is a link to the S40 forum which extensively discusses this problem.
