I've got a tapping noise on a higher mileage 2003 2.4 D5 engine.

Sounds similar to a single tappet noise.

The noise starts when driving through 2000 RPM & disapears completely at 3000 RPM.

It's not audible when the vehicle is revved when parked.

Has anyone experienced this problem?

Any Ideas what could cause it?

Maybe lifters or oil pan o-rings.

I'm prone to think its the lifters, too...

Actually, i am STILL having the problem. Especially when starting up from cold. :( When it's warmed enough, the noise disappears.

But what's the deal with these Sticky Hydraulic Lifters anyway? They say to get them changed, have to fork out RM50 pervalve. So, RM50 X 20 Valves = RM1,000 !!! :crying: (That's why I am waiting until the noise is really unbearable before getting it fixed. :)

Thanks for the replies.

I thought of the Hydraulic lifters, but not sure. The noise is there - hot or cold - it doesn't change. No noise at all if you rev the engine whilst at standstill or whilst the car is idling.

Why is the noise only at 2 - 3000 RPM & only when driving under some load ????

I'm happy to replace the lifters, but don't want to spend all that money only to find it's still got the noise?

Any further ideas would be welcome. :)

If the o-rings are bad when you are giving it gas you will loose oil pressure do to oil leaking internally throught the bad o-rings.
To find out if they are bad you need to have the oil pressure checked.

20 Valve lifters & £500 later, it was an Injector !

Conclusion - Don't rely on the Volvo Dealership's diagnosis of a broken valve or spring!!

:( :o

Yes, changed all the lifters, cambelt, oil change etc. - no different!!

Changed the injectors one-by-one.

Noise has completely gone - 1 faulty injector!

Wish I had tried that first :D

Then get them to fix the re-fixable parts back!

... and it was the dealership's diagnosis? :(
