What is OBD-II?


On-Board Diagnostic systems are in most cars and light trucks on the road today. During the '70s and early 1980's manufacturers started using electronic means to control engine functions and diagnose engine problems. This was primarily to meet EPA emission standards. Through the years on-board diagnostic systems have become more sophisticated. OBD-II, a new standard introduced in the mid-'90s, provides almost complete engine control and also monitors parts of the chassis, body and accessory devices, as well as the diagnostic control network of the car.

Yes, it is. At least to my model. And I understand that the US has imposed a condition for cars sold there to have the OBD II system onboard as well.

And I am quite sure your S80 uses the same system, though I don't know where the connectors are placed at.

The OBDII connector is located in the dash around the area.It is under a plastic cover.

As best I can tell, Volvos 2005 and newer use Ford OBDII codes (that would make sence because Ford now owns Volvo) for diagnostics. I am not sure about older Volvos though.

I asked a question about OBD for older Volvos in the 740 section. The 240 Bentley manual discusses two different conncectors with different codes, and my 91 740 Turbo wagon might even have a third - but I cannot find anything out about it. The most recent Hanes manual stops at 1988.

OBD II was mandated by the federal government of the United States in the year of 1996. All vehicles comming off the assembly line had to have their cars equipped with it. As for imported cars, I believe they have to be inspected in order to pass emissions. Not positive on that though.

Edit: I believe that all OBD II connectors are supposed to be placed below the steering column.

I had the opportunity to use a CAN OBDII reader during the weekend. Very interesting, and very friendly.

Well yes, since i've used the Volvo Reader before, (even though for just a short-while), i dont think the CAN reader could do as much, but given the price, i think its well worth it.

Also, you need to buy a different tool to delete the Service light. Unfortunately, the CAN reader cant delete the Service Light. Ah, one down.

OBDII connectors on both my 95 940GLE & my 97 940 Classic are in the centre console box. Lift the lid, remove the rubbish & you will see a rectangular plastic thingy. It's under there.
