hello,

An issue has popped up with my 85' volvo 240. the other week power to both fuel pumps stopped, no fuses blew, the rest of the electrical systems were fine. As a solution, a spliced a wire from the daylight running lights in the rear, from the wire loom just under the rear seat, and behold! the fuel pumps have been working ever since. The temporary fix was working well, until today. When turning the ignition, no sound from the fuel pump, car would'nt start. then I turned the lights on to see if any other systems had failed, they were fine, but then the fuel pumps started whirring away! car starts fine again.

I recently purchased two second hand cylindrical switch blocks, the ones in the passenger footwell area, as I thought that might be the issue, no luck yet.

The front left running has never worked, all other systems are fine, can anybody help me with this?

cheers.

I'm new to the 240's also, but I'll try to help. I picked up an 89 240 3 weeks ago with the same problem. After reading the Haynes manual that came with it I found that both pumps are controlled by the same fuel pump relay. Depending on your injection system the relay is either under the passenger side dash or the drivers side. I am guessing yours is under the passenger side. Just remove the carpet piece that hides all the mechanics and it will be up toward the right. I can't really post a pic of it right now, I'm at work. You can bridge two terminals on the harness after you remove the relay and if the pumps start working then that's the problem. My relay was numbered underneath so I jumped terminals 87/2 and 30. If you can't find it, or can't destinguish it between the others, I would suggest buying a relay at O'Reilleys or Advance Auto and matching it up to the relay you find under the dash. Then switch it out, if it doesn't work you can return the part. Also... I bought mine at O'reilleys for $45 but then found brand new Bosch relays on Ebay for $10, your choice. Hope this helps. P.S. If you can look at a Haynes manual at your local auto parts store without buying it the procedure I just spoke of is on page 4A-4 in the Volvo 240 series 1976 thru 1993. Just make a quick check for the condition of the wiring harness at the firewall and the back of the valve cover. Inside the black plastic tube or cover are about five wires that get "brittle" and create all kinds of shorts and gremlins.
