Hi Folks

Could use a little help understanding a problem with my 2001 v70 wagon with 91,000 miles. Last July I had the alternator replaced by NTB. In December I had the battery replaced at the Volvo dealership with a volvo battery. This morning the car wouldn't start. When the AAA guy jumped it he also ran diagnostics and said it was charging at 13.1 with everything off and after checking with the dealer it should be at 14.2+. The AAA guy said because it wasn't charging at the right level it was taking it from the battery which kills the battery.

I brought the car to NTB to check the alternator and they say the alternator is ok. What else could be causing the charge not to be at the level required?

Get yourself a digital multimeter from Sears or RadioShack.

With the car running, check the charging voltage of the battery. It should read at least 14.0 V, if not the alternator is not working as it should. With the car off check the voltage of the battery, it should be at least 12.0 V.

First thing in the AM, check the voltage of the battery before you crank the car. It should still be 12.0 V, if it is not, then there is a parasitic draw on the battery that is discharging the battery overnight, and does not have enough juice to start the car.
