I have a 2002 C70 Coupe and the same problem with copies not playing at all, despite working on every other CD player I have.

Contacted my usual disk supplier, svp.co.uk, who recommended a disk with Taiyo Yuden dye. The disks are Verbatim 52x CD-R 700MB pastel, and worked first time on the same copied cd.

The whole cd/dvd copy situation is a minefield, different formats, dyes, speeds, drives with rom updates. When you get a working scenario it's best to stick with it, but it can take time and effort to get there.

Cheers
Tom.

I had heard about this problem before purchasing my cars and I read a rumor somewhere that there was a fix for this. Oddly mine worked fine for a while and I commented on the fact that mine must have had the mystery fix, but hten it stopped playing a number of burned cds. I saw a thread once that had a small list of brands of cds that would work with it. If I run across it again I will post a link. It came up while googling volvo sc-901.

I purchased a 2001 C70 two weeks ago and it won't play store-bought CDs. I took it back where I bought it and they said these will not play burned CDs. I literally took a new CD out of the package and tried it and it didn't work - it makes noise, sounds like it's spinning and the entire unit pops back out. Has anyone had trouble reading CDs that you didn't burn yourself? Any recommendations on where to go for more info?

Mine too started to not like original cd's and stopped playing cd's altogether. I borrowed a friends cd lens cleaner (Memorex disc type) and cleaned the lens about three times. It's been fine since then.

Hope this helps,

Jase.

Hi i have a 99 C70 2.4 and had all the same problems...tried everything and the best sollution is a 6 CD changer from ebay about £40 or £50 and goes in the boot left side...check some are ready wired. The click noise on full lock could be the steering stoppers needing a lub...check before changing the drive shaft.

Sorry, there's no voodoo you can try with your disks that will make them play in your SC901. Buy an Alpine 6 disc player and the adapter that will connect it to Volvo's proprietary plug and you will have plenty of music, CDR's no problem, for about $250. +-. This is another one of the little annoying bugs with the C70 that absolutely should not happen on a $40,000 + car. In case you haven't already found out the SC901 is an Alpine, so is the head unit and 6 changer (exact same changer BTW) in my 2000 Expedition. So what's the deal, same year, Ford plays everything, Volvo chokes.

I have a SC-901 in my car and have the same problem: it just plays original CDs and not CD-Rs burned by me. BUT I have a found a fix for this

After a lot of trys, when using blank Sony 650 MB CD-Rs (model = CDQ-74CN), I've managed to get the radio to play my ripped CDs.

However, it will only play the complete CD as a "single track". That is: the NXT button will not work. If pressed, the radio will just go crazy and stop playing.

Instead, I have to use the FF button to go to the next track. Somewhat annoying but at least I can listen to them!!!

I have to figure out what I can do to overcome this last little problem...By the way, I burn my Sonys with Nero at 4x and never managed to get a 700 MB CD-R to play at all (and I have tried a lot of other CD-R brands...).

Hope this tip will help.

Cheers!

I have the same problem, so for $19, I bought a portable cd player from wal-mart with the cassete adapter and just plugged it in to the cassete player. This was a welcome and satisfying purchase, because my burned cd's rule my collection of music!!!!

OMG I just bought a 2004 C70 with the SC901 system and cannot play the burned cd's at all. It is driving me crazy! I want to change out the system for an aftermarket system. This will drive me out of my mind! Is there a good one out there anyone can recommend? I want to be able to use my IPOD as well. And how do you know if you car is wired for the 6disc changer? If that fixes the problem, then I could do that. HELP! I love this car but my music is up there on my list of what makes my drive enjoyable! I just retired a Saab convertible after 10 years and never had this problem!

This is an on going problem with all Volvo radios. I have the same problem. May I suggest an Ipod or a satellite radio. Or buying a new head unit-if you go this route heva a pro do it.

Just to throw in my $0.02. I purchased a 2004 C70HPT with the SC901 head unit. I've seen a great deal of inconsistency in playing CD-R's. Some play with no problem, other grind like hell and I have to frantically eject and switch disks to get the cartridge to eject. After a similar bad experience with my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder's Clarion 6 disc changer dying at 40K miles, I'm of the opinion that in dash changers are just a bad idea.

That being said, I may have figured out how to get CD-Rs to work consistently in the SC901 head unit. I purchased a stack of 30 Memorex Music CD-Rs at OfficeMax yesterday. They are part number: 1540 4001, 40x, 700MB, 80 min CD-Rs. I burned four albums using Windows Media Player at "Medium" burn speed on a Sony CDRW/DVD CRX830E burner in my Dell laptop. I'm happy to report that all three discs (I combined two albums on one) played without issue last night in the same cartridge.

My hypothesis is that inconsistency of the disc thickness is contributing to the issues loading. Burn speed is contributing to indexing. Just my guess, though.

I purchased an FM Modulator for my c70 after trying various methods to get the stereo to play copied cd's. It only cost me a few quid, plenty available on ebay or amazon, etc.

Its a great little device, plugs into the cigerette lighter, and broadcasts using radio waves so your radio picks it up (make sure to choose a channel with no stations on in any zone you drive in). This enables me to play my ipod through it, and also the ability to play tracks from a usb stick aswell.

It's not as nice as being able to play any cd, but its a start :)
