I just bought a 1992 960 Sedan. It idles rough (not too bad) but as soon as I give gas it is fine no problems and when I am on highway it runs perfectly. When I start coming to a light and get to around 15 miles per hour is acts like a 5 speed when you forget to put in the clutch and its in 5th gear. Have not taken to a dealer yet. Took to my mechanic and he said he did not have diagnostics to read the codes what were coming back and had to take to a volvo dealer. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and what the solution was or a mechanic that has seen this before

Does the trans arrow flash at all?
Sounds like it might be hanging in gear instead of downshifting.

If it is what you said about the transmission does that mean it needs a new transmission? What would account for the rough idle if the slowing down was a transmission sticking? When giving gas to it it runs like a dream. Bought it for 800 and it has an excellent body and the rest of it checks out except for this issue

Sometimes when it hangs in gear and you are slowing down it will bog the engine lower than idle and seem like it is idling lower than normal.

There might just be a minor problem in the trans that can be repaired.

I took it to a Volvo dealer and they had a list of things wrong ECM, O2 sensor, cam sensor, mass air flow but the ECM was 1800 for the part, I found a place online that will rebuild one if you send it in for 350. My question now is where is the ECM on a 1992 960 :blink:

I forget exactly which year they moved it.It is either on the right side of the car under the kick panel or on the left side of the car up under the dash.

You might also see the trans computer while you are looking for the ECM.
Most of the time the TCM is marked AW and numbers and the ECM is like jetronic or something like that.

Thanks you've been a great help. I've located a ECM for a 960 in my year range but it says its for a turbo, does it make a difference on ECM's. Mine is not a turbo. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

960 were not avalible in turbo they were only 6 cylinders.
The 940 was turbo.

They do have a 960 Turbo. Oddly enough it is a trubo 4 cyl. Go figure.
