I have a 1982 GLT volvo. The Hot/Cold gage rises very quickly to Hot a short time after the car has started, mostly in summer. The only way that I can get the gage to lower to Cold is to turn the heat on full blast inside the car then it slowly lowers to Cold again. The problem is that I roast inside the car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blush.gif) . Does anyone know what could be the problem and solution and why if I turn the heat on inside the car the car cools?

It sounds like your thermostat has failed. It's not opening properly, and not letting coolant to the radiator.

turning the heat allows the engine to use the heater core as a smaller radiator until the thermostat finally opens up.

Solution: New thermostat and a coolant flush.
