If the current tires on my Volvo are a certain size but I want to upgrade to thicker tires, will that be possible? Or do i have to get tires that specifically match the current tires on my car right now?

What exactly are you planning on doing?
Are you going to bigger rims?

yes, but I would also like to make them wider (wider as in depth). I figure if i get wider rims as well as bigger rims I could handle the road better.

Check with a tire shop in your area.Tire size and rim offset will have to be looked at.
You should ba able to put bigger rims and lower profile tires with a slightly different offset and still be at the same tire Heigth in the end.
