My car is a 95 Volvo 850.

The is a part that is attached to the side on the air cleaner.
It re-routes the ambient(outside) air from the heat shield part of the exhaust to the breather and once car is warm, it re-routes air from the cold air intake into the breather for the engine to use.

I live in Texas, it is 90 degrees today and the cold air part is blocked off. I would have thought that it would be open and the exhaust part closed off.

Is there a way to test it?

Thanks

no need to test it. its a thermal wax plug that loses its plasticity after a few years. i have mine jammed open to the cold side with a short stack of washers and a nut/bolt to hold it all together. if you pull the old wax barrel out you will see how you can maybe jam something shaped similarly can hold it open. your car will run just fine with cold air only. the warm air is supposed to help the engine warm/choke and have a more complete fuel combustion on only the coldest mornings... (i guess its wicked cold in Sweden??? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) i dunno (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) ) the warm air can lead to engine knock/ping and poor mileage once the engine is warmed up.

you can replace it for roughly $20~25 bucks but, why waste your dough? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif) especially if you are in (IMG:style_emoticons/default/gunsmilie.gif) Texas (IMG:style_emoticons/default/gunsmilie.gif)

good luck!

yes the spring is supposed to be there too. the wax plug/barrel is hiding if the brass thingy beneath it. it is called the air box thermostat. air box thermostat ask around, even my local volvo dealer mechanics say it isnt needed and they all go kaput and generally are not needed. good luck!

Hey,

Mine was stuck...it was pulling hot air only. when I think off how much extra gas it used..it makes me mad.

I am going to mod mine...so it can't do it again. I will post pics soon.

Maybe I will design a better one...one that can use the factory type box.
