My 95 850 turbo has been randomly shutting itself off while driving so I replaced the fuel filter today. While doing the i noticed the hoses (I am assuming vacuum lines) conecting top a Sensor above the fuel filter are broken. Could this be the culprit of why it is shutting off and also what is that sensor. Thank you in advance

That should be a fuel pressure regulator. Get it reconnected asap.

Look around for melted plastic. I am going to change my fuel system relay tomorrow when it come in. Then the fuel pump relay next week... I just don't want any issues later.

How many miles do you have on your 850? What have you don't to it as far as tune ups etc in the last 6 months to a year?

Do you have Triple AAAA?

The fuel pressure regulator is located on the fuel rail. The "hoses" you're seeing are likely a fuel return line or a tank vapor release hose??

To check your fuel pressure regulator, remove the hose from the end. If you see fuel coming out, replace it. Your problem could be numerous things, weak fuel pressure, ignition problems, vacuum leaks, etc...

We think we have around 250,000 miles on it. IT stopped counting at 176,000. besides this problem the darn thing has been running like a champ.

when you place the key in the ignition, turn it to the first stop, do you hear a whirring like sound? if so, your fuel pump is working. if you don't then it might be the relay (most likely) or the fuel pump itself (also most likely according to the mileage you quoted) i don't think it is either one. have you pulled any codes from the ecu? as an aside, you didnt' say if the car was hard to start after it shuts off? does it crank and crank? when you first start the car in the morning, does it take longer than usual to start, or does it start as quick as it always did?

1)when you place the key in the ignition, turn it to the first stop, do you hear a whirring like sound? Yes
2)have you pulled any codes from the ecu? No i have not had that checked. i guess i would have to go to a repair place to have this done correct?
3)you didnt' say if the car was hard to start after it shuts off? NO
4)does it crank and crank? No It starts up completely fine but as soon as you give it gas to drive it shuts back off.
5)when you first start the car in the morning, does it take longer than usual to start, or does it start as quick as it always did? Starts like it always did.

for the codes, autozone does it for free. i think pepboys charges like $25. or, you can do it yourself. if you check the 850 forum, it'll tell you how to get the codes out of the black box that is located by the washer fluid bottle under the hood. if you hear the fuel pump, it might be the relay, but they run around $100. if you have a junkyard near you, see if they have one. it'll be a pinkish color. the relay is located under the fuse panel, under the hood, back near the windshield, drivers side. open her up, and lift off the fuse panel, the relay is located beneath that panel. middle one, it's the biggest one. most likely with a number 121 on it (i think, it has been a long time since i've replaced mine.) other than that, it could be the fuel rail, or, when the filter was done maybe the line was pinched.

always good to have one handy, especially if it has never been replaced. you can try this also, if and when it dies on you again, and you are safely on the side of the road, open the fuse tray, and tap the relay, either with your knuckles or the handle of a screwdriver. sometimes this will let it live a little longer. but either way, a new relay is good to have in your glovebox that way, you can change it over and see if it does it again, if it does, at least you have taken this off the list of suspected culprits and you won't have to worry about the relay for another 150K miles.
