hey everyone... i'm a new guy here... this is my first volvo, so i know very limited amouts about them.... about a month ago i bought a '98 c70 hpt 5spd... car has 35k miles... was working fine untill yesterday... i turned the car off, and when i came back to turn it back on, nothing happened.... so i get out and repeat all the steps to get it started back up and here is what i've noticed...
1. when i put the key into ignition and door is open, no beeping sound to remind that door is open...
2. mover the key to the first position... windows don't roll up or down but locks work... radio doesnt work... brake lights work but not the headlights... hazard light work but not the turn signals... still no beeping sound...
3. move key to ON position... i can hear the fuel pump run for a sec and then a click somewhere from the cluster... the gauge cluster doesn't work but shows the milage, trip odometer and clock... still no radio or open door reminder... and as you've figured car doesnt start...
checked all the fuses, relays and everything seems to be fine.... this is my only car and just sucks that it crapped out on me like this... any info or guidance would be greatly appreciated....

1. Either the key sense wire is not reading correctly or the car does not know the door is open. Test the wire at the key cylinder, will read positive 12 volts when key is inserted, or you have a bad door switch at the lock assembly. Shutting the door firmly a few times may get it to read in the open position.

2. Locks work in any key position, windows only work in position II, everything else listed is working as it should except the radio. should work in I and II.

3. Cluster should activate all the lights in position II.

Unless you or a friend can test for problems, then you are left with the option of swapping out parts. I would inspect the ignition switch assembly first to see if all the wires read correctly in all the key positions. This can be accessed by removing the steering column shroud. Use a multimeter to test, good luck.

thanks for the input... before the car died on me, my windows would roll up and down in the I positon... the radio would also work... i checked the switch assembly and i see that it has 9 prongs in it... but i only have 8 leads going to there... are two of them connected into one? i'll take a pic and post... also bought a new assembly... put it on and same result... will post up with results
