My wife was driving our 1990 740 the other day and it overheated and blew a heater hose. After changing the heater hose and valve (it broke when trying to install the new hose)things seemed fine. However, the next day I noticed a ticking noise that seems to be getting worse. Could this be related to the overheating? Is it related to vacuum somehow? I am at a loss here and would like some advice.

Thanks

is the ticking in time with the engine reunning, does it get faster with acceleration and does it disapear when you get above 2/3000 rpm? if so then the overheating could have burnt the engine oil - but thats not likely, or straved the camshaft/tappets of oil - which would cause them to wear and warp - thus producing the tapping sound.

Mine is currently making it, and every time i do a complete oil change and flush disapears. i use it as a guide to change my oil - i'd only advise that if you know the car 100% like i do.

Matt

Thanks Matt, that is exactly what my mechanic did...drained oil, flushed real good and put new oil and filter in and the noise is gone.
