I have a 91 740 with about 200,000 miles. It recently started shifting roughly. I haven’t noticed anything else wrong with the car. I drive this car about 30 miles a day with a lot of stopping and starting on hills so I’m not surprised something is wrong. If anyone has an idea what going on I’d greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks Dan

have you check the auto box fluid? is it under filled? is the fluid browned and burned? put some on some paper and it should be a pinkish red colour. if its browner or getting near yellowish/ocre-ish then its burnt.

if so, then a flush out and refill could be in order.

does it seem to stay in gear for too long? if it does it could be a linkage cable which isn't to expensive to fix but i would just get the car looked at.

I think it shifts when it is supposed to it just jerks when it does.
The only other problem is it idles rough ranging from 500 to 700rpm.

the idle on the car in neutral or park should be around 950rpm and when in gear with brake on should be around 600-750 ish for the 2 and 2.3 litre engines.

If its hard shifting then definitley check your fluid level, it could be burnt.

A hard shift wouldnt be put down to the gear linkage as you put it into drive and the box does the rest internally. The inernal workings of the box all run on fluid pressures, so lacking fluid or poor condition fluid will not perform well, also you would notice your mpg gradually decreasing too.

a good condition box should change around 2250 rpm with general conservative driving, but if you put the hammer down should change at around 3500-4000rpm when the maximum power + Torque has/is occuring.
