Okay so I bought my first Volvo, and I'm happy with it. A 2001 S40 1.9T. So now I'm wondering about it's origin. Why does it say on the engine compartment that it's made in the Netherlands, and not Sweden. I also noticed that alot of things in it are tagged "Made in Germany" What's up with that? Not that I don't like it, i actually like the idea of a Dutch car, but can someone tell me or link me to site that would explain all of this. Thanks to all.

The S40 was made in partnership with Mitsubishi who made the Carisma. Volvo and Mitsubishi set up a factory in the Netherlands to make both of these cars. The S40 shares the chassis and some other common componants with the Mitsubishi Carisma. (The Carisma was also known as the lancer in Japan)

The Carisma was a good car it was just very boring to both drive and look at, it was slated in the motoring press in the uk at the time of launch for being so uninspiring. The S40 is the better of the two I believe.

Thanks Dandle,

That answers some of my questions. Now I'm really surprised to hear that I could be driving on a Mitsubishi platform but I would rather view it as Carisma drivers are actually driving Volvo Platforms. "Isn't that veird?" (GoldMember) LOL! Thanks Dandle. Do you have anymore info on this car that would be of any help to me?

 Hi there. Does this explain why the rear park/brake light plastic layout has been copied from Volvo and used on the latest Mitsi's? By that I mean the plastic top layer forms part of the rear top mudguards for about two inches? General Motors in Australia has done the same thing with the Holdens.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers :P

I wouldnt have thought so Volvo are now owned by Ford and I beleive the S40/Carisma deal was a one of to make those cars(the old S40s). The new S40 shares the same chassis as the Ford Focus(also used by various other companies) and Ford are using some Volvo engines in their new vehicles.
