I have read the engine becomes dirty by unburned carbon substances due to European fuels which the GDI cannot take.

Yes please - if you know a safe, effective & economical way to decoke a GDI then post away!

Look forward to hearing from you.

hi all,

mine has just failed its mot on emissions.

the guy at the garage said i need to take it to someome with a diagnostic machine but they will just change the lamda sensor and cat till the emmisions go down.(v expensive)

i am going to try changing the oil and going for a thrash down the motorway (this worked on my golf gti)

it has very low idling for ages and sometimes keeps revving itself till it cuts out. had a quick decoke once done free by the guy who services it (dont know what he did?)

anyone any other ideas???

got it through the emissions test. the old flush / oil change / shell optimax and a good thrash cleared it out.

the mot tester had a problem getting it to tick over. he cleaned the throttle housing which improved it enough to get it through the test.

i had to start it 10 times to get it to tickover for 20mins whilst the flush worked.
it ticks over so low it starts revving itself before eventually cutting out.

strangely though when it started to get really hot (97deg) it ticked over perfectly at around 800rom.

can anyone explain this bizarre behaviour!!!

Isnīt Shell optimax that expensive fuel, its called "V Power" in Europe I think.

I thought high octane fuel wasnīt good for the GDI engine.

Mine keeps revving up and cutting out also, but only when the outside temperature is around 20°c.When its colder this doesnīt occur.

My V40 just failed its MOT because of emissions test. The owner of the garage is a great guy and told me that it had just about passed and when they went on to the 2nd stage of the emissions test the CO level went right above the limit so it failed. He asked me if I did long runs and I told him I travel 60 mils to and from work daily and he said that to give it a few runs in a lower gear to burn off the CO. He has also given me Forte Advanced Formula Gas Treatment to put into my engine when the tank is half full then give it a good old blast. I will update you next Mon morning after the retest. He did say that it was down to thw GDI engine and the coking levels. If that doesnt work then possibly have to get new Cat or Lambda.

She passed but only just. He did the retest and it was worse as the engine system light came on and the airflow light. He then went onto paln B which didnt work but it got the alarm lights off. They then tweaked about with it and it passed.

Mine does something similar.

Any idea what tweaking they did to sort out the problem for the MOT?

Thanks
