Hi im new to the volvo scene , and not long owned my 1994 940 wentwoth estate . everything seemed to be going fine , untill i started experiancing the same thing . Ive read the Haynes Manual diagnostics and they say it could have somthing to do with the Inlet Manifold , or the outlet manifold which releases the exhaust gases . Other causes could be a leak in the exhaust manifold joint with the down pipe .

The only other option i have is that it could be the imobaliser cutting in , not long after the car has been started .

just spoke to a bodd , at my local volvo . he had advised me that it could be two things , one is its the throttle housing or two it could be the fule relay fuse . his advice was to bring it in for a diagnostic check £40+Vat

Hi there...!

I've had very similar experience.

Engine stalls eveyr now and then. It's always an electrical issue.

At that time I didn't squat about diagnostics. But I'd it in a garage and had a wireman checked it our.

After 2 weeks, found out that the circuit board had dry joints and the fuel injection wires became loose after a warm up.

RE-Soldered all the wires and it was fine..

Do keep us informed...

hey guys

i have a '92 940GL that i bought last week. had a similar problem. at first it just would cut out. then on saturday when i wanted to take it back to the dealer it wouldnt start at all. finally i realised it wasnt sparking. after reading all the info on here and speaking with an auto electrician, we replaced the crank sensor and now it runs fine.

If you buy the part yourself you're looking at about $130AUD. if you go to an auto electrician you can be up as far as $450AUD (can only quote in australian dollars sorry as this is the only market i know).

Posting this for people that come from search engines...

I just had a volvo 945 die on the road.

wife bought it used, seems the guy that owned it before had installed the wrong battery, there was faulty wiring, and after a belt change the belts were too tight, this was messing up the alternator.

The first thing to do before you buy a used car is read its repair manual quickly.
this will take several hours. Consider if you want to invest time and money in learning your used car.

Do not trust people that have "ridden a car like this for 10 years with no problems and you can fix it yourself". sure you can fix it yourself. I once did oral surgery in the middle of the jungle with no experience.
Had to do it, had no other choice.

What does this have to do with Volvos? A lot could go wrong with a used car. And a long list could be causing the same problem (car will not start, car dies)

After you have familiarized yourself with the car's history- ask the past owner what repairs were done, etc.

Like previous posters have said, many problems are electrical.

Check the battery. Have a battery tester. Good instructions how to test a battery online.
Then check alternator. If you can start car and it runs, see if it will run on alternator alone. some suggest removing positive connection from battery with car running. Could be quite dangerous. do your own research on how to check alternator.

If car dies while driving, could be a lot of issues.

Alternator. Fuel pump/injectors. water pump. Air filter. So guesswork will often be fruitless.
Unfortunately, going to a mechanic will always be more expensive than doing it yourself...

I had the very same problem with my 945, and every single time (it's a recurring problem) it's the crank angle sensor mounted right at the top of the transmission bell housing, the connector is a three pronged socket that hangs on the firewall. Take a look see and make sure that the cable hasn't stripped and is grounding out on some metal- often times the heat from the intake manifold burns up the sheathing.

Cheers!

could also be ignition amplifier ... has exactly the same symptoms there! plus is also a cheap item.

ooo edit: and also if you car has 100K+ on it, it could be this aswell, its a bosch unit, loads of them on ebay. usually located on the right hand side of the engine bay as you look at it next to the battery/window washer/air box. Its behind all of that. (behind my rhd car it was there, maybe slightly diff for lhd, i cant remember - is buzzing ffrom coffee overdose atm.)

I am experiencing some similar issues. One possibility is the wiring harness. If the car cuts out on you on acceleration/deceleration then it is highly likely that somewhere on your wiring harness one or more wires are touching the engine hence the sudden stall.
