I'm having issues with the car starting in cold weather conditions. This only occurs in the morning when the car has been parked for at least 8 hours and when the temperature is under 35°F or so.

What happens...

Turn the ignition and the engine cranks and cranks and cranks. Eventually it catches, sputters and either dies or finally revs normally. The colder the weather, the worse it becomes. Below 20°F, it may not start at all or take 3 or 4 times before the engine finally fires up.

Had this problem last year, took the car to the shop and after having the battery replaced, the problem appeared to be fixed. Here it is a year later, the weather's turning cold again and I'm back to square one...

Any ideas?

probably the cold start injector has failed. this injects extra fuel into the engine when the engine is cold. this helps it to start and warm up. try this.

What forum member SykO said is sound advice...one other, when was the last time the vehicle had a complete tune-up..???I'd also recommend new spark plug wires..These can look good but not capable of carrying the volts needed to crank the engine in cold weather...Good luck...

Volvo had a cold start upgrade kit and service bulletin years ago that covered this exact problem..If your car was never upgraded it is a possibility the dealer may still honour the old recall.

Thanks, fellas. I'm going to change out the spark plug wires this weekend and if that fails, see about the cold weather starting kit.

Since I didn't buy this from a dealer, I doubt the recall will do any good but I appreciate all the suggestions! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/liebe011.gif)

I would agree. Check the cold start valve. But it would also be wise to check the thermo-time switch which provides a ground for the cold start valve and thus enabling its function.

I also have a 1986 740gle with the same rough starting in colder times. Maybe it too needs that kit.
