Ok, my motor is outgrowing the shift points on the auto trans, Iam aware that you can swap TCMs from car to car due to most autos being simalair in build. Any honest opinions on which TCM to use. The current power rate on my engine is 16psi boost, 375 to 390 depending on tune octaine rating and outside temps. And this is a conservative tune, the motor is capable of higher boost and hp, but no room to open up the car, plus its a Solo2 competitor, no need for crazy hp there.
To save future trans issues, im thinking 5speed conversion, any one done this that can give me a heads up on any must do's? Will be getting into purchasing a fivespeed soon.
Oh, and tonite my 850 ran a 11.557 in the quarter mile drag tonite, in full trim, baby seat with street tires and a 4th tank of 89 octaine, im stoked, i dont usualy run straits. A entry fell out the time trials and left a spot open on tower side, they just wanted somethin to run against a race trim mustang with a clinton on the table, i won that 100.00 then parked back in my spectator space.
great nite!
1994 850 T5 = 11.557 104.70mph

Awesome bro! I know that most transmission shops could do it for you if you dont want to do it.

That is a sweet drag time. I had to show it to a couple of my friends and one of them is now convinced that an 850 is his next project car.

Im NEVER Selling! :haha: Funny, yesterday i had to do it again for the wifey, she was with the girls the night i ran that pass, after the Foot Brake Nationals was over i paid 30.00 to get the wifey all hot, man I love this car!
however, I visited the dealer service department today, ask the same question. It seems ther is no real "law" to the matching up TCM's and trannys. The same transmission code is used in a veriety of models, 850 gst, T5, and R models. The difference is the TCM's. On the 5 swap, the answer is if i have 100% of the parts and a parts car, its possible.
So, as i am awaiting a response to the question here, I am also researcing the issue with the "higher" powers. As it stands, you can use a TCM out of a stronger model. So im looking to "flash" a R TCM in the very near future.
If anyone has a 5speed for sale, let me know, dead or alive.

I hope you find one. I've been on the market for these manual 5-speeds for ages. If one ever comes up, the price is close to getting a whole car!
Hahah...

And on top of that, the manual owners are also never selling...

from what i had read, the manuals, unless it's from a canadian model R, can't handle the torque. i would check for a canadian R model with the manual. i think upsolut can reflash the tranny ecu. i have been talking with tech about rebuilding the 850 tranny, anybody know of a manual for them? haven't seen one and haynes doesn't carry one. volvo just want you to get a new one. what do they do with all the old ones then? make paperweights? i figure if i can get a manual i can pop one open and see if there is any way to strengthen them. maybe some new bands, etc. i remember when GM introduced the 200 r4 trannies and they were dogs, but if you opened them up and changed out the 2nd and 3rd gear with silicone bands they were able to withstand something like 400 lbs of torque. big jump from stock. hopefully there is something like that for the 850 autos. maybe ford parts are interchangeable with them. maybe from a focu sti, or something similar. i am also trying to find, if anybody has heard of one, a stronger diff. supposedly the one in the 850 is not changeable.

i bought my car with the swap already done. this is what im currently running.

Engine – 97’ 850 GLT engine. This is a 2.4L LPT engine that was only in the 97 GLT 850s. These engines have a higher compression ratio then any T5 or R 850 which makes for amazing power if tuned correctly. The engine was bought from Erie Volvo in NY with a lifetime warranty. The engine was installed by Advanced Diagnostics in Surry, ME.

Turbo –TD04HL-16T with 55K from a 98’ S70 T5. This is the best turbo for the LPT engine as it gives enough power to the engine without damaging it. If the turbo was ever upgraded past the 16T you would risk damaging the engines internals due to the higher compression ratio.
ECU – The computer has been replaced with a 95’ T5 Manual ECU from the UK which deletes the EGR valve and the second O2 sensor.
Clutch – 850R euro spec clutch, the most durable OEM clutch for the 850s with a holding power of up to 350HP.

it drives nicely, and if i threw some more $$ at it, it would be scary.
