1992 240GL, automatic.

Sometimes when I start the car, this awful low-pitched noise that sounds like a failed bearing happens. Ever had a power-supply fan in a PC start going out, sounds like that. Short in duration, it happens right after I fire it up, once or twice, or sometimes when it comes back down after I rev it in the first few seconds. only seems to happen a couple of times, I don't know if it's something oil pressure-related (guessing because of timing of the sound.)

Cranking, motor starts up, then URK-URRRRRK. Very unnerving.:puzzled:

Also, a road noise I noticed yesterday, while driving past a long concrete barrier wall on the highway, with my window down: a faint high-pitched chittering coming from the rear, whenever I had power applied. Sounded like I would guess a brake caliper sounded, but if I let off the gas, it went away, then when I accelerate, chee-chee-chee-chee noise... can't hear it inside, and would not have noticed outside noise unless driving at speed past a sound-reflecting cement wall...

Things that don't happen consistently are harder to track down. Have you noticed if the noise is consistent with temperature or how long the car has sat?

I might guess alternator bearing, AC clutch, water pump or PS Pump.. but then again, I always hope for the simple solutions. If you think it's worth your time, pull the belts off and give the driven members a spin when the're cold.

I think you might be right because a loose belt will give off a high pitched squeal when the engine is first started but, as the belt comes up to speed, the squeal tends to reduce or go away completely, until a load is placed on the belt e.g. power steering being operated, a/c switched on etc. etc.

Mike_281 is describing a low pitched, more of a grunt noise...more like something binding.
Just a thought on your chittering noise coming from the back...I had a Honda that made a strange high pitched noise after replacing the exhaust. It was a noise produced by the exhaust systym.
