Hello. I'm new to this forum, so here goes. I have a 2008 C30 with Geartronic trans. I love it so far. I live in California USA. I was considering changing out the stock exhaust with a performance "cat-back" exhaust from "EVOLVE" http://www.evolvecars.com I would get it installed at a pro muffler shop too. If I were to do this, would I void any of my 4 year Volvo warranty if any future engine problems should come up? Same question with a cold air intake system such as "K & N". Thanks...

see, there was a supreme court case involving aftermarket items on a warrantied car. and the owner won. but, if it is listed as "off road use" and something happens that is catastrophic, and the cause is, beyond a reasonable doubt, casued by the item you installed, your warranty is void. so in plain new yorkese, it's a cockshoot. your call. the exhaust, per say, can't void the warranty, but if anything were to happen to the engine and it can be traced back to this exhaust, you are up that famous creek. most, and i stress most, aftermarkey companies have some type of exemption, especially in cali, check to see if it is carb certified, if so, they (the dealer) can't say jack. if it is not carb certified, ask one of the techs about the legality of the modification in the state of california. and for informations sake, the case was magnuson v honda. now about k&n, they are carb certified, so you can change the filter, as long as you install it in the original housing. no cone filters. some cone filters can't be modified to have the maf sensors that new cars need, so the certification can only be claimed with the original housing and the new filter. wow, my fingers are tired.

I just got the following email reply from Volvo of North America regarding my original warranty question:

Thank you for contacting Volvo Cars of North America.

It will not void the warranty but if any repairs are a result of the failure due to the aftermarket parts it would not be covered.

Sincerely,
Tracy Faerber

Make sure you go to a mod friendly dealer too. Although the aftermarket part might not void a warranty claim, Volvo dealers are notorious for denying them anyway.
