So I have been having these weird jerking problems with the car, cleaned the air sensor, and I bought a new fuel filter, and now I am trying to figure out how to change it.
Does anyone have any advice?
I read that I have to lower the pressure, etc.
Im pretty sure the filter is on the bottom of the car, near the oil pan, but am not sure.
Any help would be appreciated!
its a 1989 volvo 740 gl

What really interests me if I have to do any decompression of the fuel system...
The mechanic is being a b**** saying he wont do it if I give him the part...and even though the thing only costs 20 bucks I really dont wanna spend another 20, im a student for crying out loud :D !!!

half way along the car, pretty much under the join where the front and rear doors meet, there will be a pan/tray/cradle witht he fuel pump filter and pressure accumulator in.

there are 3 nuts/bolts holding this in. beware, drop it out and support it, best to do on a ramp or with the car on axle stands.

once its out you will see, from the look of the new filter (physical size) which is the part to replace. you dont technically have to de-pressurise it, just have a cloth handy and a cork/clamp of some sort.

clamp the pipe which goes to the fuel tank, otherwise you'll inadvertantly syphon all your fuel onto your face when you slowly undo the pipes attached to the filters.

do not loose the bolts which attach the filter!!! also you will need some new copper washers when re-assembling them. undo them, put new filter in with new washers, put bolts back in, then make sure everything is nice and tight, remove the clamp from the fuel feed hose and check for leaks.

re-attach cradle to car ... turn ignition onto the second (not starting it - ready to start) the fuel pump will prime for a bit, check for leaks with this happening, when it stops it will be pressurised to wait a minute or two looking at it for leaks, if all is ok then start the car. it might cough and spluuter for a bit but it will start up.

Matt

ps beware of getting fuel in your eyes, it stings and can potentially blind you, if you do, wash your eyes out and seek medical advice.

always make sure your car is safe when jacking and on axle stands - trust me i have had a car fall on me and it isnt nice - especially a 2.5ton 740 NOT GOOD!

also, have a friend there with you so IF anything should go wrong, you have help to hand immediately!

oh man thanks a ton!
this is just excellent - its under the damn car!
im going to try to get around to doing this.
Sounds kind of complicated... but all that I am worried about isnt my eyes ;) (well kind of) but if the pressure should really get messed up...
ill let you know how it goes!
thanks!
all in all how long should I expect it to take?

well i hae access to a proper ramp, but as i explained it (this was also my first time changing it) it took me about half hour in total ... but i did spend about 2 hours trying to find some damned copper washers!

you wont mess the pressure up. your mechanic was probably on about newer cars, you have to drain the system (eg lines etc) then change it, then fill them, then pressurise then start the car.

just take your time ... thats all you can do, set aside an afternoon after college or something to do it, then you have time and dont have to rush, then if your done in less time ... jackpot.
