After a long trip my 2000 s80 radiator fan runs after shutting off the engine. But my 2002 S80 does not run after the engine is turned off. It only works when the engine is ON. The temp dial is in the middle at 12 O' clock position. I bought this car recently.

:) The engine is probably not hot enough for the fan to cool things down...The only time mine runs in the summer (and its hot here) is when I've driven around town, return home and park..If temp is over 100 degrees the fan will stay on immediately after I shut the engine off..It may run for 5 or 10 minutes, than again maybe for a couiple of minutes...Its all about how hot the motor is....
The other time the fan comes on is about an hour after I've shut it down...This is when you've used the A/C and its designed this way.....My temp guage stays at the 12 o'Clock position also...Have never seen it showing a higher indication..

I've come to believe its all Ambient Temperature Controlled...The fan never runs in the winter time.....Hope this helps...
