Hello 2001 volvo C70 2.4 t, 99 000 Km's, (60 000 miles), and my garage tells me my gearbox (man.)will have to be replaced. allways took care of it and never did crazy up or downshifting.. Isn't that way to soon? I thought volvo's were good and well built cars... in first, second, third and fourth, there is a metallic noise, going up and down with RPM. no matter what you do, nothing to be heard in fifth..can it be a spring from the clutch? dealer looked with all his mechanics, and they don't know what it is but they think it is coming from the gb. however, when we took some oil out, no metal parts in there, oil was dark but clean.do you have any idea's? difficult to say like this, I know but... I paid a lot of money for this car, and I love it, but i think this is my last volvo.. had 3 renaults before, no problem with them and I did over 250000 km's in each of them...
does somebody have an idea? please?

Describe this metallic noise, is it a high pitch whine? Grinding? I should hope a gear box lasts longer than 60k.

difficult to describe, it is like grinding, but more like something metally is touching, only slightly but getting worse, a rotating part...
I went to another workshop, and we looked together, and it seems like it's coming from the diff... I found a second hand GB for 300 GBP, or 500 euros, so that is a start. But now I am trying to find out if I can't take out the old, apparently ruined diff, and put a Heico limited slip diff in instead..
The thing is, I never heard of any Volvo-diff being ruined before 80-90 k!!
But hey, something is wrong, so...
Otherwise, wonderfull, lovely comfortable but sporty beast... such a pity.

correct me if i am wrong, not accusing, but aren't you the poster who was asking us to look at his utube video of you on the nord with your 40? maybe, perhaps, your racing the tranny had something to do with it. i mean, you did post that you had 300+ hp so, if you modded the engine what about the tranny?

No, I'm not that one. I did drive it to the Nordschleife, and on it, and there is a video on youtube, but I have a C70 and a R21 Turbo, and no 40..
On top of that, I only drove 4 laps of the Nord, and I didn't push like hell, so it shouldn't matter. btw, if it can't endure some sporty driving, it's no use calling it a GT..
I think I had the badluck of having a bad manufactured GB. But I found a used one with less then 30000k on it for not too much, going to change the thing next weekend.
I will keep posted if I find anything when taking this one out..

forgot to say: yes, my engine is a bit modded, but only to 250 hp, and this GB should take that in its stride... But anyway, hopefully, this time the GB lasts a bit longer..

sorry, mixed you up with another poster. anyway, even a few laps, and not sure if your 70 has a tranny cooler, will overheat it. and the gt moniker is just that, a moniker, label, marketing angle. even with my 8509, which your 70 is based on (mostly), i had the tranny cooler upgraded because with all the mods done, i didn't want the tranny to burst. check the color of the oil, how dark is it? if it really dark, i mean like almost black, it's burnt. sounds like either the spring or one of the "fingers".
