hey all,
as the topic states my sunroof will not close. im not sure as to what happened but all i know was i was driving with it open and it was working fine but when i got home it would only close half way. currently i do not have the money to have it fixed and with the winter right around the corner i have no need for it. so i was wondering if there was a way for me to just manually close it? also if there is a way that doesn't require me to completely disassemble the interior of my car that would be preferred. i have a 1997 850 glt any help is greatly appreciated!

thanks all!

It could be any of a few things. Try helping it close by pushing it forward with your hand. Don't worry about taking the interior of the car apart, you can do most sunroof work/repairs without removing the headliner.

-If the tracks are really dirty and dry the roof can get stuck shut or stuck open - when the roof starts to close it will hit the spot and automatically open again... is this what is happening? Make sure they are clean and have a film of grease - this is done from outside the car looking down.

-Something could be broken: one of the guides, or the actual panel - the sunroof panels metal frame does have a tendancy to rust on these cars. Parts could be binding or getting caught on other parts.

If you can't get it closed with the motor, you can remove the interior light and there is a spot for a hex key. Using the hex key you can wind the roof shut. I would do this as a last resort, as you can very easily cause more damage by winding shut a roof that doesn't want to shut.

now wait, does it the motor try to turn the sunroof? does it grind? if so, it might also be the motor jumped the tracks. mine wouldn't open, it would tilt but when i tried to opent he sunroof, it would just tilt back and then grind away. when i pulled off the cover and removed the motor, i found that the teeth on the motor were all gunked up and it was causing the gear to roll on the tracks. a little cleaning with a toothbrush, not mine it was the mrs  , some lithium grease and all is good.

first of all thank you for the help!
now when i try to close the sunroof it gets to about halfway and then it begins to struggle but there is no grinding noise then it just stops and opens back up. also i have tried cleaning it to no avail, so im just going to try to get to close it manually using the hex key.
again thank you for all the help!

alright now i just tried to manually close the sunroof using the hex key but i could not even find a hex key on the motor. so maybe if someone could describe to me where it may be? also o think something might have broken and fallen in the way of the tracks because when i tried to close it this morning i noticed the sunroof lifted up a little before it started to open again on the passenger side track. is there anyway to be able to clear the tracks?
again thanks for the help

there is no hex key on the 850's. i just opened up mine to fix the motor. anyway, you will need two people for this. the window is in the tilt mode, correct, if so, you must remove the two screws closest to the front of the vehicle. there are two little panels that go up with the sunroof so that you can't see the screws. they bend out of place and can be removed. now you'll see the screws. there are three grouped somewhat close together towards the front of the car. you want the front two. on both sides. have someone help you lift off the sunroof, it is heavy. now slide close the sunroof cover, there are two pressure clips, press them and the cover comes out. now you can look in and see if there is anything in the tracks. if so, clean. if not, use grease like in the previous posts. install is the reverse. just be careful when reinstalling the screws. mark the position before unscrewing them. once you have rescrewed them on, make sure the marks match up. then close the sunroof, get out of the car and see if the sunroof is flush with the top of the car. if all is straight, get a beer, pat the wife on the bottom and beat your chest. good job. if you are a female. get beer, wolf whistle some the strange guy walking down the street , jump the mr and belch loudly. even better job. good luck and post with your results.

well unfortunately the window is half open and is not in the tilt position. now will this change how i remove the sunroof or not? also in my last post i meant that it looked like the sunroof window lifted off the track as it tried to close, not tilt. sorry for not clarifying that.

I encountered a similar problem with my 960. Note this thread pertains to the Volvo 960/S90 Broken Sunroof selector Guide Track. May be same parts/mechanism. Here is a link to the thread.

Ok, so one of your guides is broken Murphy. Apparently there is no hex key - I could have sworn there was... anyway, I have replaced guides before, it is not difficult, all you need is a few different torx bits and a pair of pliers.

You can get the glass panel out when you get it closed to the halfway point, but it is going to be a bit of a struggle. You can also force the panel forward even further with some effort. Close the roof - when it hits the reboud area switch the key off. You should be able to sit in the seat and push the roof further forward - it takes a good push.

Along the interior sides of the sunroof there is a long narrow black plastic cover on each side. Slide these rearward 1/8 of and inch and they will unsnap - then wiggle them out (or out of the way). You should now be able to see the gold colored torx screws that secure the panel. There are 3 screws per side, you want to remove the frontmost 2 - this will allow you to remove the panel. Once the 2 screws per side (4 total) are removed you need to slide the panel back another 1/4 inch to detach it from the guides on each side. You should now be able to slide the panel out the rest of the way and set it aside.

If people are interested in guide replacement I can try to make a writeup for the procedure - it isn't hard, but it requires patience and a 6 pack :)

Hey guys. Know those black clips that hold the head liner in? Well my head liner came out last year and before I could get it back in. Some idio t well the girlfriends father grabbed it in the shed and moved it and in that process lost one or two of those black plastic clips/metal piece. Where could I get new ones? I know FCP has odd and end stuff like that maybe they have it.
