I have a 2000 S40 that has run realy great till this week. It suddenly started idling really fast when the temp meter went up. It will only start when cold. If it is driven for even five mintues, it will not restart for at least two hours. Sometimes the meter shows hot as soon as it is restarted with the engine racing, but then it drops back cooler and the rpms drop too. The racing and temp problem is usally only when stoped in park or with brake. Any ideas? I have been told that it may be a coolant sensor?

Agree on coolant sensor, the computer is getting the wrong temp reading, if it thinks the car is overheating, it will idle a lot faster to pump more coolant through the motor. The wrong temp reading will also cause the starting problem you mentioned.. Change the sensor its not that expensive and its really easy. It's next to the top radiator hose where it attaches to the engine (thermostat housing). You might as well change the thermostat too since you are there.
