Hey everybody, i just bought a 1997 V40 2.0 SE with 90K miles on the clock and am having some small issues with the trip computer, i have searched a few times but i am not getting the information i need, i wonder if you can help?

The trip computer has a selector switch on the dash inbetween the seats which has around 8 positions you can change between. Each position at a guess should change the function of the trip computer but it is not currently doing so, several positions select 'range' and several positions select 'external temperature'.

I can't seem to get the engine oil temperature or Inst MPG at all.

Do i have some faulty sensors or does my SE model only have a few of the functions available ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Just to ask the silly question, you have been checking the instaneous MPG with the car driving under acceleration and have you check the engine temp with the engine warm? - under overrun (or whilst the car stationary) and with the engine cold both of these will display "---"

Thanks for the reply, i have been waiting in vain until now :)

The display never reads ---- it always gives the readout for the wrong setting, inst MPG reads 32 MPH the same as aveage speed.

Ive tried while stationary, when accellerating, when at cruising speed on cruise control, nothing seems to make a difference.

Being as it is showing the wrong reading rather than no reading at all it makes me assume there is something wrong with either the trip computer, or the sensors.

Hi there,

As the trip computer takes the fuel consumption form the time the injectors have been open (duty cycle Vs flow rate) and the speed from the speedo, if the car runs and the speedo works, the problem isnt with sensors. This would leave wiring faults or the trip computer head.

Just as an odd note, on my V40 T4 under moderate acceleration the instaneous fuel consuption only reads a maximum of 25.4L per 100 km. Has anyone else see this?

Being as the readings are there i am thinking it must be the trip computer itself.

What would i need to be replacing to fix this ? Would a reset cure it ?

And why has my central locking stopped responding to the key fob controls ? lol
