:460: yea! My 1995 850 volvo is having problems. I've got hesitant and lackfull acceleration, def. not a smooth and crisp zip. Also, it's got a rumble felt at the wheel and heard at the muffler - throughout the car a vibration. Any ideas besides the spark plugs?

I've got an oil leak somewhere, a leak in my coolant tank and the engine seems hot. yes!

Lack of acceleration: MAF or dirty/sticky throttle body?
Rumble and vibration: (a) worn out CVJ (Constant Velocity Joint)? (B) out of balance wheel(s)?
Rumble heard at muffler: Cannot get a mental picture of this one.

Get the leak in your cooling system attended to straight away as any leak will decrease the pressure on the coolant, causing the coolant to get hotter than it should be.

Modern engine coolant systems are designed to operate at higher than normal atmospheric pressure (remember your physics from school - increased pressure raises the temperature of the boiling point) and increased pressure on the coolant raises the boiling point to approximately 105 degrees Celcius before the coolant starts to boil.

You need to be a bit more specific regarding the oil leak (i.e. top of engine, side of engine, rear of engine, underneath engine, etc.)

Good luck!

sounds like the pvc system is clogged, and the leak is the lower seal due to pressure build up in the crankcase, the pvc is supposed to relieve the pressure but if its clogged the the only weaker point is that seal.
im sitting here with that problem, not so much the "lost" zip, but the leak and clogged pvc system. repairing in two days.

Sorry, meant rumble heard at exhaust. The suspension is certainly torn up, I assume the CV joints fall under suspension? Anyway, that's a whole other issue. The engine is what I need running at the moment.

I'll fix that coolant tank - I've found a really really small hole, any recommendations on what to fix it with? I heard about a Bars Leak.

The oil leak came with the car when I bought it used off someone who probably didnt take the best care of it. The leak is all over by now and so it's hard to distinguish where exactly it's coming from. I've been told by mechanics that I need it detailed and then injected with a neon dye and gone over with a magic wand yada yada.

If anything I would guess it's underneath the engine since I don't see anything above the engine besides a little oil which came out from the top (where you add the oil).

I'm not really getting a hissing sound when I open it up with the car running though. I saw on here that was an indicator. Why do you think its the PVC system besides the leak?

I know the coolant system isn't a major player in the acceleration of the engine, but it seems link due to the fact that it bubbles and steams a good while after I've parked.

I'd replace the coolant tank - they don't cost much and are readily available.

You do need to clean the engine/transmission up to try and establish where the leak is. I certainly hope it's not the crankshaft rear seal leaking as they can be quite expensive to repair (approx. $1000)

Good luck!

I'm replacing the tank - not much $$. I will eventually clean the engine, find the leak, fix the suspension, but first things first. Thanks for your input

doing spark plugs tonight...

Not a good sign. How bad is the smoking?
How much oil are you losing?

Not a lot of smoke -not thick, but I can see it. I use maybe a quart a month or two. Mostly, due to a leak somewhere. :gitara:

If not much out of the dipstick, then its nothing to be too worried about. May just even be a little evaporation.
