The car has 140k and is a 1998 S70 turbo.

This problem has been going on for about 4 weeks now. The car starts and runs fine but every now and then it idles rough then stalls when coming to a stop light, stop sign or idling in traffic. I can feel a little surging just before it dies. The car starts up after about 2-3 attempt and runs fine again. This happens about 4 times a week lately. My mech. is stumped on this. I have done and checked the following:

* replaced the fuel pump & relay
* Fuel filter
* checked vacuum hoses
* checked that idle air valve

Any help would be great on this.

I had a similar problem with my '98 volvo v70 xc, ends up we had to replace the mass air flow sensor. If you do that be sure to get one for a turbo, as a mass air flow for a naturally-aspriated engine won't make a turbo engine run. We also found a vacuum hose had a hole in it, now it runs considerably smoother.

Also now we're having to replace the coolant temp sensor for similar issues with rough idling at start due to the sensor returning a low temp and giving too much fuel. Are you able to take it to a shop with current diagnostic equipment? The people who owned my car before me took it to the local volvo dealership and they never cleared the old codes so we had a lot of confusion in diagnosing my problems. Hope this helps!!
