My 1996 volvo 850 when I start the car the key ignition gets stuck after it starts and will not spring back to the run position. The enging is still running but the abs and another light are on the dash and I can't put it in gear unless I use the shift interlock. What I have been doing is gently turning the key back till the lights on the dash go off .Then everything works fine. I probably need a new ignition switch. Are they easy to replace yourself or could I squirt some lithium grease in there for a temp fix?

Thanks
Jeffy

Jeff, I have a 1997 with the same problem. I think that the best you could do is to buy a new ignition switch(ebay, etc) and have it install at a small Volvo auto repair shop.
Good luck.

Before replacing the ignition switch, I'd try squirting some contact cleaner into the ignition switch and see if that frees anything up - well worth trying.

Good luck!

It may be better to use the graphite powder for locks. But i read at the back label, it may be carcinogenic.

Auwww, heck. Tonnes of things we use/play while DIYing are carcinogenic anyways.

:haha:

Sorry, i didnt mean to imply that these stuffs are not dangerous. Just that, i think most of us know that as long as we exercise proper care in handling these 'medium-to-long-term-ill-effects' materials, we are OK.

Cheers.
