Hi this is my first time on ere !!

I have a volvo 440si K reg the problem i have is when i been driving for about 5 mins and pull up at lights my engine revs are at 1100 and rev on there own up to 2000 could any one assist me with any help to this problem as i aint got the cash to take it in the garage ?????

mine did that for a while, its an indication that a sensor isnt working properly, you could try pulling the engine codes, but my guess would be the oxygen sensor on the exhaust.

Thanks not clued up that much on engines though so is 'pulling the engine codes' or 'oxygen sensor ' a job best left to a mechanic ???

pre 1993 engine codes are pretty easy, there is a diagnostic box just behind the air filter, theres a post somewhere here on reading those, the oxygen sensor is on top of the exhaust, just about under the gear levet at the front of the catalytic converter, it can be a pig to get loose, but its just a case of unscrewing it and screwing a new one in, but they can cost a small fortune, so best get the codes first, most garages should do that for free if you ask nicely and they think they will get the work.
