Hey everyone - this is a follow up to my "new-to-volvo question" I posted here.

I got a response from the seller and was hoping for some advice from the gurus in here. I'm not afraid to get my hands a little dirty, but we want to be able to use this car as our "as-needed" vehicle. We mainly live by bicycle, but it's nice to have wheels once or twice a week for bigger jobs. I don't want to pick up something that will end up sitting under repair 80% of the time. The heater fan thing scares me a little since it gets might cold in Southern Ontario, and electrical issues can be a pain in the butt...

Anyway, if anyone has any thoughts on this, I'd love to hear them :-)

Thanks!

1.  The engine is the 4 cyl turbo.  The engine model is B230FT.

2.  The most serious issue that I'm aware of is that there's an oil
leak.  I have to add about 1 ltr a month to keep it topped up.  It was
diagnosed as a leak at the rear main seal, and I paid a transmission
shop to remove the tranny, put a new seal on the engine, and put the
transmission back on.  But it still leaked after all that expense, which
was very frustrating.  Unfortunately it's a time intensive process to
diagnose an oil leak -- there's a chance it might be a gasket that's not
expensive to remove and replace, or maybe it's something inaccessible.
I haven't bothered to crawl under the car, wipe down the engine, and
then watch where the oil seems to be coming from, but that's what
someone would have to do.  Or, just put up with the problem and add a
bottle of oil each month ...

3.  Other issues which I consider minor, but others may feel differently
about, are:
- Needs repainting (you'll see when you look at it)
- Driver’s seat is ripped
- Various electrical glitches (the heat gauge doesn't work at all, the
gas gauge sometimes works but sometimes is unreliable, the power windows
usually work but occasionally go awol for a while, and same with the
cabin heater fan)
- Some floor rust (you can only see it from underneath)
- The ABS speed sensors are dirty and activate at the wrong times
- A muffler clamp is broken.

4.  As far as overall reliability, that's a tough call.  Clearly, if
someone wants to buy a fully reliable used car, then he'll have to pay a
lot more than the $1500 that I'm charging for the volvo.  It's an old
car and its days are numbered, that's for sure.  On the other hand, my
daughter drove it all this past summer when she worked at two summer
camps near Port Sydney, and she's put about 5000 km's onto it since last
March, and it didn't break down for her going up and down the back roads
of Muskoka, so I don't believe that it's in imminent danger of blowing
up.  But, with any old car, it's just hard to say.

6.  Regarding the service history, I bought the car in July 2007.  At
that point, some brake work was done to achieve certification.  Since
then I've had it into a transmission shop twice, the first time to
adjust the valve check balls, and the second time being the unsuccessful
attempt to fix the oil leak.  Also in July 2007 I replaced the battery.
I bought the car privately from a friend, who'd owned it about 3 years,
and he gave me his service records which you can look at if you like,
and I'll give them to whoever buys the car.
