1997 850 with auto. How does gear shift knob and boot come off? The boot on my car is getting tacky and is wearing through. How hard is it to remove?

put the car in nutral, with the park brake up and your foot on the brake, sqeeze the button that unlocks gear selection, pull strait up, with a little force.... dont hit yourself in the jaw! :haha: and open the sunroof if you have one.
good luck!

and the boot is connected to the center console, i think its the same as mine... im using a 97 shift knob.

I just changed mine last weekend. It may help for you to use a little spray white lithium grease into the gear knob, to lubricate the mechanism. Of the years, the hardening of the inner mechanism contributes to making it DIFFICULT to pull it out.

If done right, the knob should just pop out.

If it helps, i parked at a levelled surface. Switched the engine off, and put the gear in L or so, for the pulling. I did not pull up the handbrake, cos i wanted the space. And while sitting down, it require just a little jerk for the knob to pop.

I replaced the gear-knob with a wooden knob last weekend again. A different one i got from a friend. And this time, the knob just pulled out EASY. Hahah...
(But i forgot to take photo again...) Argh. Sorry. Maybe i'll just use by cellphone camera next time. But the resolution would be lousy...

Nice. Interesting. Anyway...

:)
