Anybody swap S/V70 door handles onto their car? What did you do about the lock on the drivers door? The lock cylinders are different diameters and don't appear to swap, unless I'm missing something. Am I just going to have to have it re-keyed by a locksmith?
Thanks

No way to do it that I can see. The lock cylinders are different, and so is the housing for each. I didn't know that going in to this. My experience with locks is with V-dub, which involves just swapping the lock cylinder. I assumed, which obviously I shouldn't have, that since the door handles were so similar that all I would have to do is swap the cylinders and I'd be good. Not so.

Live and learn, eh? And yes, the rear door handle is from the V70.

I'm learning how to re-key Volvo locks.

Unfortunately, in the process, I tried the 'hit it with a bigger hammer' method, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This time it didn't. I gotta get another drivers door handle. All is not lost though, as I did manage to figure out how they come apart.

I'm a little surprised that I haven't seen a post from somebody who has done this before. There must be somebody with later model handles on their car.

I was afraid someone was going to ask that. The V70 handles work really well, obviously, but do require a couple changes. One is that it has to be re-keyed, which isn't too tough once you figure it out. There is also a rod from the handle that fits in a slot in the lock mechanism, and when you turn the key it's this rod that causes the car to lock/unlock. This rod is different on the two, but the one from the 850 handle can be used on the V70 handle.

I'll get some pics.

Actually, I think the handles on my car came off an S70. Wagon or sedan shouldn't matter.

Don't bother painting your old ones. Find some S or V handles near you and grab 'em. Car-part.com
