Okay I just bought my dream car knowing I'd need to put some work into it and no I am not a mechanic I'm a girl-but a smart one.
I had a reputable mechanic work on the car doing brake work and trying to solve the blue (thought it was white) and replace some turbo/coolant hoses. They couldn't get the smoking fixed without taking the engine further apart but cleaned it degreased and apparently soaked it overnight is some magical stuff. It came back smoking much less but still smokes when climbing hills slowly and with a warm engine.
New problem since they gave it back is the idle or RPM's rev's between 1-1 1/2 when in park. I will take it back to have them address it but can anyone tell me what to have them look for in either one of these issues? They did replace hoses on the turbo and replace the oil in the turbo and didn't find any leaking there.
Can I just say that this car is interesting. It is my dream car but my 1991 aerostar is much less fussy. I had the drivers side windshield wiper stop working on the freeway in a rainstorm tonight. I had to pull into a gas station ask to borrow a wrench and tighten it. Every day a new thing.

It sounds to me there is a slight oil leak onto an engine hot spot giving off this whitish smoke but, where it is coming from, I wouldn't have a clue.

I haven't the technical background to advise a qualified mechanic just what to look for and even more so if this garage is reputable, experienced and competent to work on Volvos. However, a mechanic who doesn't know his way around a Volvo can end up being quite an expensive liability and, guess who ends up paying the piper.

Replaced oil in the turbo?????????

Yep, Volvos sure are interesting cars. However, I've got to admit that, being one of those backward Aussies, I don't even know what an Aerostar is, so I can't make any definitive judgement on whether an Aerostar is less fussy or not compared to a Volvo.

But what I do know is a wheelbarrow is also less fussy than a Volvo - but somehow or other lacks the sheer delight and satisfaction a Volvo is capable of giving.

Finally, if a loose windscreen wiper is as bad as it gets, then I wouldn't be too worried - just relax and enjoy the experience of being the owner of one of these very different, but magnificent, vehicles.

If its just about the crazy idling:

Attack the IACV, and TB first to see if that changes anything. And by attack is CLEAN, not replace yet.

Cheers.

It would be nice if we weren't working with the same problems posted in two different threads.

as on the other thread, sorry for the repetition. I am very grateful for any advise. I obviously am not a mechanic but want to know what I can and start doing what I can on this car. It is working quite well but the smoke is a concern. I will be taking it back in to have the guys who worked on it look at what changed about the idle in the time they had it.
thanks

I get suspicious every time a hose has been removed/replaced and the idling characteristics of the vehicle changes. When hoses are tampered with they could end up being damaged, not correctly refitted etc. etc.

There are other things that can affect the idle such a MAF, the computer controlled timing etc.

Your Volvo is designed to idle at approx. 800 rpm and a competent mechanic should be able to quickly establish which area is causing the engine revs to increase.

But, I repeat - if they have no experience working on 850's then it can be a situation of the blind leading the blind; as even Volvo specialists often have trouble tracing some of the quirky behaviour these complicated machines are quite capable of displaying.

+1 you have some vacum hose issues, im sure something didnt go back correctly, judging from all the other post on this car, it is a victim of shadetree molestation. rosso75 popped the mystery smoke with the pvc. all that disection and soaking parts sounds screwy anyway. find a new mechanic. and print out the help we give you, arm yourself with this vast knowlege graced to you, just say no to answers you dont understand before a wrench turns.
good luck!
